Finding the Minimum: Enter Gradient Descent

So, our specific update rules become:

  1. Update $\theta_0$: $\theta_0 := \theta_0 - \alpha \frac{1}{m} \sum_{i=1}^{m} (h_\theta(x^{(i)}) - y^{(i)})$

Important Note: You must update $\theta_0$ and $\theta_1$ simultaneously. This means you calculate the partial derivatives for both $\theta_0$ and $\theta_1$ using the current $\theta_0$ and $\theta_1$ values, and only then update both parameters with their new values. Otherwise, you might end up with an incorrect descent path.

We repeat these updates for many iterations (or until the change in $\theta_0$ and $\theta_1$ becomes very small), and eventually, our $\theta_0$ and $\theta_1$ will converge to the values that minimize our cost function, giving us our “best fit” line!

Beyond Simple: Multivariate Linear Regression

What if we want to predict a student’s test score not just from study hours, but also from attendance, previous grades, and whether they had coffee before the exam? (Okay, maybe not the last one, but you get the idea!).

One crucial practical tip for multivariate linear regression with Gradient Descent: Feature Scaling. If your features have very different ranges (e.g., study hours from 1-10, but previous grades from 0-1000), Gradient Descent can take a very long time to converge or even struggle. Scaling features (e.g., normalizing them to a 0-1 range or standardizing them to have a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1) makes the cost function’s contour plot more circular, allowing Gradient Descent to find the minimum much more efficiently.

A Few Words on Assumptions and Limitations
